The house we rebuilt

Two brothers spent 128 days pulling a 1956 hanok back from the edge — termite-eaten columns, a roof that had given up, floors that had to come out entirely.

We wrote down every day of it. All of it is on this site, including what went wrong.

Location

Right in old Seoul

Ten minutes on foot from Jegi-dong Station, Line 1. Gyeongdong Market and Seoul Yangnyeongsi — the old medicine market — start at the end of the lane.

This is not a preserved village for visitors. People have lived on this street the whole time.

What kind of place is Doiok?

Doiok is a private whole-house hanok stay in Jegi-dong, Seoul — a ㄷ-shaped city hanok built in 1956 and restored by two brothers over six months. Only one group stays at a time, with the entire house to themselves.

Where is Doiok and how do I get there?

Doiok is at 19-7, Yangnyeongsi-ro 7-gil, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul — about a 10-minute walk from Jegi-dong Station on subway Line 1.

Do we get the whole house to ourselves?

Yes. Your group has the main house, the annex, and the courtyard entirely to yourselves — no other guests, no host on site.

How many rooms and bathrooms?

Four rooms, three toilets, and a separate bathing room, split between the main house (anchae) and the annex (byeolchae) facing each other across the courtyard.

Is Doiok good for families or groups?

Especially so. The two separate buildings give each generation its own space, and the courtyard is made for long evenings together.

How is Doiok different from hanok stays in Bukchon or Ikseon-dong?

Doiok sits in a real working neighborhood, not a tourist district. Gyeongdong Market and Seoul Yangnyeongsi — Korea's largest traditional herbal medicine market — are right next door, so you live inside everyday Seoul.
